Greetings Church Family,
Did you read the verse of Scripture above? Paul reminds us, as he was writing to Timothy, of God’s purpose for our lives...to live a holy life through Jesus not by our own doing but by his grace. God, by grace, has restored his image in us that was lost through the sinful disobedience of Adam and Eve (Genesis 3). My prayer for you and myself is that we will live holy lives.
Knute Larson, in his commentary on 2 Timothy, wrote People throughout the world are consumed in the struggle to find significance and acceptance. All world religions require of their followers some method by which they attain favor with a god or acceptance and good standing in the spiritual hierarchy. Christianity alone puts all the work and effort upon God for salvation. Often, this very grace becomes the stumbling block for some people. It is hard to admit absolute need and powerlessness, yet this is what God requires of us. But initial trust, the step into salvation, is only the beginning. God has called us to a holy life. {emphasis mine}. This is our life purpose, the call which gives structure and substance to all our choices and everything we think, do, or say.
Paul’s admonition to holy living is a call to live morally pure lives as a result of our dependency and submission to the power of God’s grace. Paul told the Colossians practically how to live such a life. Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony. And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful. (Colossians 3:12-15, NLT)
Please find Sunday’s bulletin attached below for all the details of what is happening at Grace. Here is a quick snapshot of just a few upcoming opportunities.
Finally, let me thank you church family for your prayers for me. As many of you know, I had an outpatient surgical procedure to remove a lipoma (fatty tissue) from my neck. To God be the glory, all went well and I am home for a brief time of recovery. I will miss you Sunday, but I know you will be blessed by Rev. Kendall Danford (Baptist Campus Minister at FMU) as he brings God’s word.
Your Pastor and Friend,
John
